Bishop Donatus
He became a diplomat on the political scene of that time in Europe, and in his own environment a leader of a tendency for the city autonomy. He should be considered a wise ambassador to both courts (Frankish – Didenhofen, 805 and Byzantine Constantinople, 808) who managed to provide peace for his town of Zadar and other Dalmatian towns out of a complex political situation. In one word, Bishop Donatus was the most important person on the political and cultural scene of Dalmatia. These were the times (the turn from 8th to 9th century) when Frankish and Byzantine interests in the Adriatic region were in conflict. The resolution of these political events was crowned by the Treaty of Aachen in 812.
